“Fare thee well, sweet Ana Liffey”… a parting message from Tony Duffin

May 2, 2025

After nearly two decades with Ana Liffey Drug Project, today’s my last day as CEO. It’s been an incredible honour to serve this organisation, its clients, staff, volunteers, Board, funders, and supporters since I first joined in 2005.

When I look back on these years, I’m filled with gratitude for the chance to work alongside so many dedicated and empathetic people. Together, we’ve faced many challenges—from economic downturns to changing drug trends to the COVID-19 pandemic—and we’ve worked hard to make sure Ana Liffey stayed true to its ethos: providing low-threshold, harm reduction services to those who need them most.

There have also been many proud moments: setting up new services in Limerick and the Midwest; getting outreach vehicles on the road; advocating for things like supervised injecting facilities and decriminalisation; launching the Law Engagement & Assisted Recovery (LEAR) programme; and so much more. These achievements were only possible thanks to teamwork, resilience, and a shared commitment to the people we serve.

But beyond the projects and policies, what I’ll remember most are the people: the clients who trusted us and let us be part of their lives; the staff and volunteers who go above and beyond every day; the Board members who’ve offered support and guidance; the funders who believed in us; and the many individuals and organisations who’ve stood with us along the way—often quietly and without recognition.

Ana Liffey is more than a service—it’s a community, built on respect, empathy, and hope. I know it’ll continue to thrive and adapt, staying true to its values in the years ahead.

Thank you to everyone who’s been part of this journey. It’s been a privilege.

In the words of Shane MacGowan: “OK, time for sayonara… even the best friends gotta part.”

Don’t be lucky—be safe,

Tony
